All of the random weird and dark scenery scattered across the show is what really makes it insane for me. It mixes lots of "unacceptable" concepts to create a peculiar kind of beauty. It's not that the anime includes gay things, it just doesn't care. What I'm trying to say with all of this is, I like to think of it not as gay things being included, but that their reality is fluid, and their souls go beyond just some genitalia. Or something in between or entirely different. On the love for Akira, we don't know what kind of love it is, could be just very deep appreciation, nostalgia, admiration. I still think androgynous is a better fit. He probably could morph into any body and most likely he's sexual organs aren't important, so biological principles don't apply. I find it so beautiful as a representation of his might and what he truly is.Ībout the hermaphrodite/androgynous thing, I'm pretty sure his body is just a manifestation, he's a divine being. I guess he is still a masculine character, but his physique is what amazes me. When Miko and Miki express love for one another, it's them making peace and showing that, though Miko had a strong frustration and anger toward Miki, Miko never wanted to see harm come to Miki. One of the messages of the media is that we as a society need to love one another better, but because of how we interpret the word "love," we often forget that sometimes loving people has nothing to do with sex and sexuality.īasically, the dichotomy I'm conveying is broken down this way: when Ryo talks about loving Akira, he definitely means it in a romantic and sexual way.

For instance, I recently saw a post in which people were misinterpreting relationships and attractions between characters, unfoundedly mashing together characters in relationships that never existed because they misinterpreted the dialogue and missed the point. Secondly, my mentioning of people forgetting the point of the show and getting caught up on gay aspects of the show seems to be a theme on this subreddit.

So, first off, my above comment was to convey that calling someone "your gay friend" is a bad thing. (I refer to "us gays" because I am, myself, gay and part of the lgbt community.) Titling it as "hella gay" isn't meant to overshadow the message it tries to send, though i do understand how some people can view it that way. Thus, Devilman being "hella gay" is not the main aspect of the franchise, but a prevalent one. And for something so old to have that much gay rep, its kind of important to us gays. TL DR: Something can have a prevalent subject in it (ex: the "hella gay" parts if devilman) without it being the main subject. Ash and Eiji's love for eachother is an undeniably important part of the seiries, but it is not the main focus. The "hella gay" aspect is not the main focus of the franchise, obviously, but something can have a very prevelant aspect or idea without it being the main focus. BUT, With so little lgbt representation in the media (though i wouldn't exactly call ryo's and akira's relationship healthy) having something so old have so much, its kind of important for the lgbt community. It has a very important message, and that is undeniable. Yes, and no? Obviously, Its not JUST gay. but please don’t respond to this post as if these are my opinions, since they’re not and I just want to share them.(fyi you shouldnt call someone your "gay friend" we don't like that)
